Not only does the saturated ground cause roots to become loose, the sheer amount of rain is washing more soil away from the roots so it doubles the problem.

On top of this we've had a windy start to the year with unusually strong winds for the start of spring. This all makes for bad news for aging or diseased trees exposed to these conditions.
